BLUE RIDGE, GA:

HISTORY AND TODAY

The History of Blue Ridge Georgia

Blue Ridge, Georgia is a small mountain town located in the southernmost tip of the Appalachian Mountains. This quaint town is rich in history, culture and natural beauty. From its humble beginnings as a Cherokee settlement to its present-day status as a popular tourist destination, Blue Ridge has come a long way.

The first inhabitants of Blue Ridge were the Cherokee Indians. They settled in this area for its abundance of fertile land, natural resources and peaceful surroundings. The name "Blue Ridge" was given to the town by the Cherokee people as a result of the blue haze that surrounds the mountains.

In 1834, the Georgia General Assembly designated Blue Ridge as Fannin County's county seat. The town quickly grew and became a bustling hub for trade and commerce. With the arrival of the railroad in 1886, Blue Ridge further flourished as it provided easy access for goods and people to come in and out of the town.
